Hello Donna, Hyperacusis is a chronic condition that is normally accompanied with tinnitus to some degree. The major cause of hyperacusis is cochlear damage. This is almost always as a result of exposure to noise at some time in your life. We do have very good successes with this condition but it does take some time and you should expect your tolerance to noise to gradually increase over a three month period Most people don't know that there are millions of minuscule hairs within the cochlea that get revved up by pressure of loud noises. Stimulation then causes a manouvering of those diminutive hairs, which reminds one a wheat field stirring in concert with the wind. As a noise is perceived by the ears the auditory hairs wave around, electrical impulses are sent via the auditory nerve which your brain interprets as noise. All those tiny nerve endings and the delicate nerve cells get damaged easily when you expose yourself to loud noise. The nerve damage is all the more worse if you have been exposed to loud noises for long periods of time. Those sensitive inner ear organs like the auditory nerve cells and hairs most often get damaged from a knock on the head. The tiny hairs can get bent or even busted and then send electrical impulses randomly to the brain which are interpreted as sound, though there is none. Cochlear damage which leads to a ringing in the ears often is caused by: ear wax removals a procedure known as ear candling swimming accidents playing sports surgery to the head, ears or nasal passages middle ear infections Loss of hearing is permanent but our tinnitus remedies are very successful dramatically lower the tinnitis levels from a damaged cochlear
