Walter asked:

Hyperacusis: I began hearing a high pitched tone (sounds just like one of the high tones used in hearing tests done by audiologists) in my right ear. This has not gone away and it's been several weeks. My hearing in that ear became imapired - and loud noises are very painful. The 'ear ringing' is constant.

The ear-nose-throat specialist refered me for testing and I have some loss of high-pitched sounds in BOTH ears equally (even though I'm having problems with only one ear). The test showed that I have no difficulty with the range for speech. However, I am having difficulty hearing some people - usually when there is background noise or if the acoustics are poor in the room (such as the ear-nose-throat Dr.'s office which has a lack of carpeting).

Some background is that my father and his mother and other family members on his side are hearing impaired -though my father never had ringing in his ears when he began losing his hearing.

Also, I have a parrot who shrieks when he wants attention (high-pitched).

I haven't listened to loud music for the last 10 years -and even when I did, I never listened to painfully loud music.f

Also, I am male and 35 years old.

Although I have been struggling with a life decision on possible returning to school for my doctorate, I don't have any symptoms of stress that I know of. and the Pain Management Specialist did beta-blockers and a RadioFrequency Thermo Coagulation treatment on my lower back a couple years ago.

Our Response:

Hello Walter,

The tinnitus noises you have described are almost certainly due to cochlear damage. High frequency hearing loss and tinnitus are always experienced with cochlea damage and the fact that you have become sensitive to loud noises confirm this opinion.

Hyperacusis can be defined as a condition where the world just seems too darned loud. We do have good success by using a three month treatment course that is made up of two separate and distinct treatment remedies.

Walter, I have given you more details in the link below.
