Hyperacusis: My tinnitus started brutally two years ago after seeing the 2nd Harry Potter film (extremely high sound level in the cinema), and has never left since. The tinnitus is totally unilateral (left ear), and the tinnitus noise is in the form of a low level high-pitched whine; varies during the course of the day (louder at night) and according to external stimuli (exercise, alcohol consumption, fatigue). Tinnitus volume greatly raised by jaw position (!!): nearly unbearable when jaw is extended forward. I also suffer from hyperacusis, mainly in the upper-midrange (dinner plates and cutlery noises, for instance). My profession has been sound engineer (studio) for the last 22 years.
Hello Didier, Your profession gives you away! You have obviously been subjected to noise at your place of work for many, many years and it is certain that you have caused damage to the cochlea I that time. When cochlear damage happens, you start to experience some hearing loss in the higher frequencies, tinnitus and hyperacusis. We do have excellent success in the treatment of tinnitus and hyperacusis and I have discussed this in great detail in the link below.
