Meniere's Disease: I have had tinnitus as long as I can
remember, at least since early teens. I am 44. My tinnitus increased
a few months after starting on Wellbutrin SR 18 months ago. I currently
take Wellbutrin XL 450 mg a day.
However, in May 2004 I had a severe vertigo attack that lasted at least six hours, with ear pressure and fullness. After that attack I realized I have had at least two other episodes exactly the same, one five years previous, one 10. I have been diagnosed with Meniere's.
My tinnitus fluctuates from day to day. It is bilateral, and used to be a combination of tones, three in my left ear and four in my right, prior to 18 months ago. Now I have an underlying low pitched "hum" in both ears, high pitched ringing in my right, and a variety of medium tones in both ears.
Present constantly but flucuating in loudness from day to day, or even throughout the day. I have no hearing loss, although my low frequency hearing is right at 20 db in both ears.
Occasionally I will get a sudden extremely loud pitched ring in one or the other ear, followed by a decrease in hearing. The ring will gradually subside as my hearing returns. This usually lasts about 15 to 20 seconds.
This actually happened in both ears the other day at the same time.....I had isolation ear bud head phones on at the time and had to pull them out because the pitch was so high and loud it hurt.
The ear buds make my tinnitus more noticeable, but are necessary for my job.
