Tinnitus: I'm afraid my tinnitus history might be rather unhelpful as far as sorting out the root cause!The tinnitus began some 20 years ago and has gradually worsened over the decades. Tinnitus that is caused as a result of cochlear damage does not always appear immediately and the tinnitus does not always go hand in hand with deteriorating hearing loss.
Cochlear damage can occur as a result of a host of different factors such as exposure to noise, inner and middle ear infections, a blow to the head, dental surgery etc. If you are sensitive to noise then you have almost certainly suffered cochlear damage with the resultant high frequency hearing loss, tinnitus and sometimes also hyperacusis.
It often does happen that cochlear damage tinnitus is triggered or aggravated by the taking of prescription or over the counter drugs.
Did you know that there are millions of micro hair cells deep inside the ear that get very stimulated by the pressure of loud noise.
As and when a sound is perceived by the ear the auditory hairs start moving, electrical impulses go streaking through the nerve which your brain figures out to be a sound.
Stimulation stimulates moving of the diminutive hair cell, very similar to to a wheat field stirring in time with the breeze.
Those millions of tiny nerve cells and the delicate auditory nerves break very easily when you are exposed to loud noise over a period of time. The auditory nerve damage is even worse if you listen to your mp3 player at loud volumes for extended periods.
The hair cells and nerves are damaged and bent from a severe blow to the head. One's little hairs can get bent or even broken and then randomly send electric pulses directly to the brain which interprets them as a sound, though there is none.
Some form of cochlear damage which leads to high frequency hearing loss and tinnitis often is caused by earwax treatments gone wrong, ear candles, swimming pool accidents, hurting yourself playing sports, surgery to the head, ears or nasal passages also from middle ear infections.
