My tinnitus started when I was 11, after I went to the shooting range with my father. The tinnitus noises can be desribed as a constant ringing in my ears. Over the years there was a marked improvement in the loudness of the ringing. What worries me is that there is some hearing ranges that I have trouble with. (especially some alphabetical sounds that I have trouble hearing clearly.

Hello Adrian,
When you are subjected to sudden loud noises without adequate protection as was obviously the case with you, it is very easy to sustain cochlear damage. High frequency hearing loss, tinnitus and sometimes a sensitivity to sounds are the result of cochlea damage.There are millions of tiny hairs situated in the cochlea that get affected when you perceive an external sound.
As and when an external sound is picked up the minute hairs move and send signals via the auditory nerve which is interpreted as a noise by your brain.
Agition then cause a stirring of all those minute hair nerve cells, very similar to a field of wheat on a farm swaying in time with the wind.
These little hair cells and those tiny auditory nerves are easy to break when subjected to sudden loud noises. Obviously those that are unfortunate enough to work in a noisy place or frequent very loud pubs over a period of time will experience more damage.
These delicate organs can also be damaged from a knock on the head. Our cilia often get bent out of shape or even broken and then randomly transmit impulses directly to the brain which interprets them as a sound, although there is no sound present.
Any type of surgery to the head can also cause tinnitus from cochlea damage.
Loss of hearing is not reversible but our cochlear damage remedies have successfully lowered the ear ringing levels of many thousands of tinnitus sufferers.
The fact that the tinnitus noises have increased in intensity over the years can be acsribed to further cochlea damage that has occurred in the intervening years.
