Client asked:
My tinnitus started in December, 1990 after I had an inner ear infection but did not know it, flew to CA and back in an 8-day period. While in CA, my nose blew constantly unlike anything I have ever had, white thick, thick mucous. The ear ringing has never stopped. It may be a ear ringing or a hiss in the ear.
Our Response:
Hello Bonnie,
The ear ringing or hissing you are experiencing is known as tinnitus and is as a result of cochlear damage. Ear ringing from this type of damage to the delicate structures of the cochlea often occurs from inner ear infections and in you case was probably worsened by the increase and decrease of pressure whilst flying. When an external noise is experienced the thousands of little hairs in the cochlea are stimulated.
Whenever an external sound is picked up the minute hairs sway and send impulses through the auditory nerve which is interpreted as a sound by your brain.
The hairs in the cochlea are easily damaged from the huge pressures generated by extreme blasts of sounds. The inner ear damage is made worse if you are a band member or have worked in a loud environment for a long time.
The inner ear and its delicate structures are also damaged by a strong blow to the head If damage occurs and the cilia are damaged or bent they can send random impluses to the brain which are interpreted as noise even though none is present.
Any type of surgery to the head can also result in noise induced tinnitus.
Hearing loss is most certainly incurable nevertheless the tinnitis treatments have been very successful at dramatically and permanently lowering the tinnitus levels from a damaged cohlea.
