Client asked:
My tinnitus started with a ringing in my right ear when I was two months pregnant over five years ago for no apparent reason .I hear high pitched ringing. The tone of the ear ringing doesn't seem to change. I attended an ear, nose and throat clinic about this problem over three years ago where i received a hearing test. The test came back that my hearing in my right ear with the ringing was better than my hearing in my left normal ear .
The consultant told me that this was not possible and I had the test done again the same day to which the results came back the same. I was refered to another clinic with more sophisticated equiptment, the results were the same. I went for another test where I had things attached to my head, after this finished I was asked to come back for the same test again but didnt go back as I didn't see the point as I was told that there was no cure for tinnitus, that I would have to learn to live with it.I have had a problem with my inner nose for a year and a half.I have a bent bone on the right side, not in the nasal passage but over the back of this part which the docter couldn't get the camera past, this causes throat problems and breathing problems through the nose.I have had two head injuries which required hospital treatment but this happened more than 14 years ago. I have been exposed to loud noises but none more than anyone else, nothing extreme
Our Response:
Hello Karen,
Tinnitus from cochlear damage often can occur as a result of damage that was done many months or years prior to the ear ringing starting. It is possible that you were experiencing some stress whilst pregnant and the stress acted as a trigger for the tinnitus.
I hav explained how easy it is to sustain cochlear damage in the link below. You have been exposed to loud noises as well as experiencing two head injuries serious enough to need hospitalization. That alone can lead to cochlear damage and tinnitusA little known fact is that there are literally millions of small hairs in the cochlea that are moved by the great pressures of sound waves as a result of external sound.
Whenever an external noise is detected the tiny hairs sway and send impulses via the auditory nerve which is interpreted as a noise by your brain.
The movements of the hairs in the cochlea can be likened to a field of grass moving in tune with the breeze.
These small hair cells and those delicate auditory nerves get damaged easily when subjected to sudden loud noises. The damage is made worse if you have played in a band or worked in a noisy factory for a long time.
