The tinnitus is a continous buzzing mainly in left ear, very difficult for me to say which type of tinnitus i have, the tinnitus has been with me for + - 15 years, I think the tinnitus started with noise as I worked in Durban harbour for 40 years, could also be stress related, I am on hypertension drugs but don't think this to be the problem,Recently had an ENT Specialist look at it also Audio thingy test, Middle ear damage was ruled out, I seem to have a 25% hearing loss in both ears, Verdict was "get hearing aids but you have to live with the tinnitus"

Hello Phillip,
Your exposure to noise over such a long period as well as the 25% hearing loss you have makes it almost certain that cochlea damage is the cause of your tinnitus. Hearing loss and tinnitus are very common in people who have been exposed to noise in the work place as you were. We cannot do anything about the hearing loss but can almost certainly help with the tinnitus noises you are hearing.When an external noise is heard the many thousands of tiny hairs in the cochlea are stimulated.
As and when an external sound is picked up the minute hairs sway and send signals via the auditory nerve which is interpreted as a noise by your brain.
The agitation of the hairs in the cochlea can be likened to a field of long grass moving in tune with the breeze.
The hairs in the inner ear are easily broken from the pressures generated by sudden bursts of sounds. The damage is made worse if you are a band member or worked in a loud environment for a long time.
The cochlea and its delicate structures are also easily damaged by a severe blow to the head Our cilia often get bent out of shape or even broken and then randomly send impulses directly to the brain which interprets them as a noise, although there is no sound present.
Any type of surgery to the head can also result in hearing loss.
