The shock and noise of the wave could have cause cochlear damage. The cochlea is a sensitive inner ear organ which is easily damaged. The pressure could also have contributed to the cochlear damage. It is also possible that you had in fact experienced some cochlea damage prior to this incident and that this incident was merely the trigger for your tinnitis.There are millions of little hairs housed in the inner ear that move when you hear an external sound.

As and when an external noise is picked up the minute hairs sway and send impulses through the auditory nerve which is interpreted as a noise by your brain.

The movements of the hairs in the cochlea can be likened to a field of grass rippling in tune with the wind.

The cilia in the cochlea are easily broken from the pressures generated by extreme blasts of sounds. The damage is all the more amplified if you are a band member or have worked in a loud environment for a long time.

The cochlea and its delicate structures are also easily damaged by a severe blow to the head If damage happens and those tiny hairs are broken or bent they can send random impluses to the brain which are interpreted as noise even though none is present.

Noise induced cochlear damage tinnitus which can cause a ringing in the ears often is by ear wax removals, a procedure known as ear candling, swimming accidents, hurting yourself playing sports, dental surgery.

Hearing loss is incurable however the ringing in the ears treatments have been very successful at lowering the tinnitus levels from a damaged cohlea.
