Client Asked:
The tinnitus noise sound like a high pitched ringing. I do not hear the ear ringing all the time. Just happened recently. The ear ringing is sometimes high, sometimes very low, and sometimes none at all. One of my back lower teeth had to be removed by an oral surgeon last September. I was "put under" for the dental procedure.
Our Response:
Hello Marlene,
Those noises you are describing (a high pitched ringing) are typical of tinnitus that is caused by cochlear damage. There are thousands of little hairs housed in the cochlea that move when you hear noise.
When a sound gets discerned by the ears and these minute hairs start moving, signals go streaking through the nerve which your brain interprets as sound.
The movements of the hairs in the inner ear can be likened to a field of grass rippling in time with the breeze.
These little hair cells and those easily damaged auditory nerves get damaged easily when exposed to sudden loud noises. Obviously those that are unfortunate enough to work in a noisy place or frequent very noisy clubs over a period of time will experience more damage.
The cochlea and its delicate structures are also damaged by a severe blow to the head If damage happens and the cilia are damaged or bent they can send random impluses to the brain which are interpreted as noise even though none is present.
Any type of surgery to the head can also cause noise induced tinnitus.
Damage to hearing is most certainly not reversible nevertheless the tinnitus treatments have been very successful at dramatically and permanently lowering the tinnitus levels from a damaged cohlea.
This is in fact the most common form of tinnitus and is almost alays caused by exposure to sudden loud noises. Very often this happens as a result of dental or head surgery.
I have explained cochlear damage tinnitus in greater depth in the link below, Marlene. I have also explained how we can help you with this type of tinnitus.
