Client Asked
Hi, I have had tinnitus and a ringing in my ears for a little less than a year. Recently, I have experienced a whirring or humming sound as well. I can only hear it at night when I'm reading in bed or when I'm trying to fall asleep. I'm not sure about the cause, I can only guess. I have been a flight attendant for 7 years so I am exposed to the airplane engine noises a lot. I do have some seasonal allergies as well. I am only 32 yrs. old. I'm trying to figure out why I have these new hissing sounds. The ear ringing does not bother me, but I can't fall asleep due to the hissing and whirring. My main question is this: can wearing ear plugs cause any damage and contribute to tinnitus? I have been wearing earplugs every night for 6 years. I underatand that your ear has little hairs. Do you think earplugs damage anything? Thanks for your time.
Our Response:
Hello Heather,
Wearing the earplugs will certainly NOT cause any damage. The little hairs in the ears you mention are actually inside the cochlea which is situated in the inner so ear plugs will not cause any damage to them.
I believe your tinnitus condition is caused by cochlear damage which is most likely the result of a continued exposure to loud noises from the airplane engines. This is a common occurrence in your industry.
Those hissing and whirring noises you hear that are keeping you awake are also indeed typical of tinnitus Type 4 as cochlear damage tinnitus known.
The ringing in your ears is also a symptom of cochlea damage and fortunately for you we have excellent success with this tinnitus type and you have every reason to be optimistic about getting relief from the ear ringing and the other tinnitus noises you are experiencing.
