Client Asked:
Had very mild tinnitus since i was young, about 16 is as far as i can remember having it. But it only started getting loud and changing in the last 3 or 4 years, and now seems to be increasing fast. I am 31, and when i realised the tinnitus was starting to be loud and constant I could not work out what was causing it as none of the above seem to suit either.
Our Response:
Hello Sinclair,
The most common form of tinnitus is without doubt cochlear damage tinnitus. There are millions of tiny hairs housed in the cochlea that get affected when you hear an external sound.
When a noise is heard by the ears and these small hairs start moving, signals are sent through the nerve which your brain interprets as a sound.
The agitation of the hairs in the inner ear can be likened to a field of grass rippling in time with the breeze.
These microscopic hair cells and those easily damaged auditory nerves are easy to break when exposed to loud noises. Obviously those that are unfortunate enough to work in a very loud environment or visit noisy pubs over a period of time will suffer more damage.
These sensitive organs can also be damaged from a knock on the head. Our cilia often get bent out of shape or broken and then randomly transmit impulses directly to the brain which interprets them as a sound, although there is no sound present.
Any type of surgery to the head can also result in hearing loss.
Hearing loss is most certainly incurable however the tinnitis remedies have been very successful at dramatically and permanently lowering the tinnitus levels from a damaged cohlea. This normally occurs as a result of exposure to loud noise, a blow to the head and inner ear infections. The other major cause of tinnitus is stress but as you have ruled that out, I believe it is most likley that you have experienced cochlear damage at some stage and that this is getting worse as time goes by.
Sinclair, I have explained Type 4 tinnitus and how we deal with it in more detail below
