Client Asked:
My tinnitus never stops ringing it rings all day. i woke up one morning and the ringing was there. i am having a hard time determing what sound of nosie it is. I am not sure how to describe it. The tinnitus is defenintley a ringing sound but it is hard to match up to the catergories you have. It is in both ears and if i am exposed to loud noise it gets worse. every so often it rings real loud out of now where. alcohol and caffenie i think makes the ear ringing worse. I also grind my teeth and wear a night gaurd. but i am not sure if the two are related. I have been exposed to alot of loud music in the past in college and at alot of concerts. I also used to have a loud system in my car for about3 years. Please help me gain my silence back again. I am only 25 years old and frustrated and scared.
Our Response:
Hello Eric,
The tinnitus noises you describe, the exposure to loud noise from concerts and also the loud sound system in your car, these are symptoms of cochlear damage. Tinnitus and some hearing loss in the higher frequencies will occur as a result of the exposure to noise. There are thousands of small hairs situated in the cochlea that get affected when you hear an external sound.
When a noise is heard by the ears and these small hairs start moving, signals go streaking through the nerve which your brain interprets as noise.
Agition then cause a stirring of all those little hair nerve cells, very similar to a field of wheat on a farm swaying in tune with the wind.
These minute hair cells and those infinitesimal auditory nerves are easy to break when exposed to sudden loud noises. The damage is all the more amplified if you are a band member or worked in a loud environment for a long time.
These delicate organs can also be damaged from a knock on the head. The tiny hairs often get bent out of shape or even broken and then randomly send impulses directly to the brain which interprets them as a sound, although there is no sound present.
Tinnitus from noise (cochlea damage tinnitus) is also often caused by scuba diving accidents, swimming pool incidents, ear wax removals etc.
Hearing loss is most certainly incurable nevertheless the ringing in the ears treatments have been very successful at lowering the tinnitus levels from a damaged cohlea.
We do have an excellent success rate with this tinnitus type which is known as Type 4 tinnitus.
