Client Asked:
My tinnitus started after a doctor made a perforation of the eardrum after an otitis media. Afterwards, I had Tennitus but not only the hearing sound is bothering me, also the anoying "feeling". Another doctor found out that after the perforation of the eardrum, also the stapedius muscle was damaged and probably one of the nerves in this muscle or the ear drum.
Since then (3years) I have tinnitus (caused by this damaged nerve)together with an anoying feeling (a typical nerve-damage-feeling like after a tooth has been pulled out). This anoying feeling was within 3 years walking from my ear allover (some months later) the top of my head, going to the back of my head and since the last months again going into my ear. Massage of the spot where the nerve is anoying me gives relief and also decreases the tennitus.
Our Response:
Hello Kurt,
Did you know that there are literally millions of tiny hairs in the cochlea that are influenced by the great pressures of sound waves as a result of external sound.
When a noise is heard by the ears and these small hairs start moving, impulses go streaking through the auditory nerve which your brain interprets as sound.
The movements of the hairs in the inner ear can be likened to a field of long grass rippling in time with the wind.
These little hair cells and those infinitesimal auditory nerves are easy to break when exposed to loud noises. The inner ear damage is made worse if you are a band member or worked in a noisy factory for a long time.
Any type of surgery to the head can also result in noise induced tinnitus.
Damage to hearing is incurable however the ringing in the ears treatments have been very successful at reducing the tinnitus levels from a damaged cohlea.
The tinnitus symptoms you are describing are typical of cochlear damage. This could possibly have happened at the time of the eardrum perforation. The shock and noise of these procedures can lead to this type of damage.
