Tinnitus started afer I woke up one morning 12 months ago after waking to a loud popping sound (which at first I thought was part of a dream); turns out I have an acoustic neuroma, 2.4 cm (about 1 inch) in diameter behind my right ear, between bone and brain; I am treating it with herbal remedies, but this has caused severe hearing loss (about 90%) in my right ear, and perpetual tinnitus which has never subsided.

There are thousands of little hairs situated in the inner ear that move when you perceive noise.

When a noise is heard by the ears and these minute hairs start moving, signals are sent through the auditory nerve which your brain interprets as a sound.

The movements of the hairs in the inner ear can be likened to a field of long grass moving in time with the breeze.

These minute hair cells and those easily damaged auditory nerves get damaged easily when subjected to sudden loud noises. Obviously those that are unfortunate enough to work in a very loud environment or visit loud clubs over a period of time will experience more damage.

Tinnitus from noise (cochlea damage tinnitus) is also a result of scuba diving accidents, swimming incidents, removals of ear wax etc.

Damage to hearing is most certainly incurable however the tinnitus treatments have been very successful at dramatically and permanently lowering the tinnitus levels from a damaged cohlea.

The damage to the cochlea as a result of the acoustic neuroma is likely to have caused the hearing loss and tinnitus you are experiencing.
