There is no doubt that the root cause of your husband's tinnitus is as a result of cochlea damage. The ears and inner ear structures are very delicate and sensitive and it is very likely that the ear infection has caused this damage.There are millions of tiny hairs situated in the cochlea that get affected when you hear an external sound.
When a noise is heard by the ears and these minute hairs start moving, impulses go streaking through the auditory nerve which your brain interprets as noise.
The movements of the hairs in the cochlea can be likened to a field of grass moving in tune with the wind.
These little hair cells and those delicate auditory nerves are easy to break when exposed to sudden loud noises. The inner ear damage is made worse if you are a band member or worked in a loud environment for a long time.
The cochlea and its delicate structures are also easily damaged by a severe blow to the head The tiny hairs often get bent out of shape or even broken and then randomly transmit impulses directly to the brain which interprets them as a noise, although there is no sound present.
