When a sound gets discerned by the ears and these minute hairs move, signals go streaking through the auditory nerve which your brain interprets as a noise.

These small hair cells and those easily damaged auditory nerves get damaged easily when subjected to loud noises. The inner ear damage is made worse if you are a band member or worked in a noisy factory for a long time.
