I don't know whether the tinnitus is the result of loud noises or ear drum damage. i was on a long flight coming home from the tropics and the noise of the plane was driving me crazy. when I went to the doctor she said my ear drum was inflamed, or something like that. so I'm not sure of the origin because i didn't develop tinnitus symptoms for over a week after the flight. While in the tropics i spent a lot of time in the water and I think there was water in my ears then. It's been around a month and ahalf since I've returned

Hello Laurie,

It is most likley that you developed an inner ear infection whilst in the tropics and that some cochlear damage has ocurred which is causing the tinnitus.When an external sound is heard the thousands of tiny hairs in the cochlea are stimulated.

When a noise is heard by the ears and these small hairs start moving, impulses are sent through the nerve which your brain interprets as noise.

The agitation of the hairs in the cochlea can be likened to a field of grass rippling in tune with the wind.

The cilia in the inner ear are easily broken from the huge pressures generated by extreme blasts of sounds. Obviously those that are unfortunate enough to work in a very loud environment or visit very loud places over a period of time will suffer further damage.

Any type of surgery to the head can also cause noise induced tinnitus.

Damage to hearing is incurable nevertheless the tinnitus treatments have been very successful at lowering the tinnitus levels from a damaged cohlea.
