It does seem likely when you had that headache followed by earache, that you had a bad inner ear infection that caused some cochlear damage.
This type of tinnitus is known as Type 4 tinnitus and we fortunately do have good results in the treatment of this tinnitus type.There are thousands of tiny hairs situated in the cochlea that get affected when you perceive an external sound.
As and when an external sound is picked up the tiny hairs move and send signals via the auditory nerve which is interpreted as a sound by your brain.
The agitation of the hairs in the inner ear can be likened to a field of long grass rippling in time with the wind.
The hairs in the cochlea are easily broken from the pressures generated by sudden bursts of sounds. Obviously those that are unfortunate enough to work in a very loud environment or visit noisy places over a period of time will suffer more damage.
Noise related cochlear damage tinnitus which can cause a ringing in the ears often is by ear wax removals, a procedure known as ear candling, swimming accidents, sports injuries, dental surgery.
