Our Response:
Hello Scott,
Auditory nerve damage usally only occurs when one has had some sort of physical trauma where the nerve can be severed. Being exposed to noises will not cause auditory nerve damage, but it will cause cochlear damage which can lead to hearing loss and tinnitus. There are thousands of small hairs situated in the inner ear that move when you hear an external sound.
When a noise is heard by the ears and these small hairs start moving, signals go streaking through the auditory nerve which your brain interprets as sound.
The cilia in the inner ear are easily broken from the pressures generated by sudden bursts of sounds. Obviously those that are unfortunate enough to work in a noisy place or frequent very loud pubs over a period of time will experience further damage.
Noise related cochlear damage tinnitus which can cause a ringing in the ears often is caused ear wax removals, ear candling, swimming accidents, hurting yourself playing sports, dental surgery.
Hearing loss is most certainly not reversible nevertheless the tinnitus treatments have been very successful at reducing the tinnitus levels from a damaged cohlea.
