I developed tinnitus about four years ago, after a major sinus infection and head cold (was NOT taking much medication).

Thank you for your e-mail regarding tinnitus. I believe that the most likely cause of your tinnitus is an inner ear infection at the time you had the sinus infection.

This type of infection often goes unnoticed as it is in the inner ear but it causes cochlear damage which in turn leads to high frequency hearing loss and tinnitus.A little known fact is that there are literally millions of small hairs in the cochlea that are influenced by the great pressures of sound waves caused by external noise.

As and when an external noise is detected the minute hairs move and send impulses via the auditory nerve which is interpreted as a sound by your brain.

The agitation of the hairs in the inner ear can be likened to a field of long grass moving in time with the wind.

These small hair cells and those delicate auditory nerves get damaged easily when subjected to sudden loud noises. Obviously those that are unfortunate enough to work in a noisy place or frequent very loud clubs over a period of time will experience more damage.

These sensitive organs can also be damaged from a knock on the head. If damage occurs and those tiny hairs are broken or bent they can send random signals to the brain which are interpreted as noise even though none is present.

Noise related cochlear damage tinnitus which can cause a ringing in the ears often is by ear wax removals, ear candling, swimming accidents, sports injuries, dental surgery.
