Client Asked:
I have no idea what might be the main cause of the tinnitus. My father and younger sister both have ringing in their ears as well. I had a hearing test and was told that there was no help for this, as it had something to do with high frequency loss or something like that. I mainly hear background noises when in a crowd or even a movie theatre. It is so embarrassing to always have to say "I'm sorry , I couldn't hear you." Please tell me the ENT who said there was nothing that could be done was wrong. This is really starting to affect me.
Our Response:
Hello Sheryl,
The fact that the ENT has suggested that you have suffered high frequency hearing loss definitely indicates to me that you have suffered from cochlear damage at some stage and this is what is causing the tinnitus and the hearing loss.
We cannot restore hearing loss but can help you with the tinnitus resulting from the cochlea damage and this alone will help you to hear better, or at least not have the high pitched ringing noises drowning out everything you are trying to hear. There are thousands of tiny hairs situated in the inner ear that move when you perceive an external sound.
When a noise is heard by the ears and these small hairs move, signals go streaking through the nerve which your brain interprets as noise.
Agition then cause a stirring of all those minuscule hair nerve cell, very similar to a field of wheat on a farm shifting in concert with the wind.
These small hair cells and those tiny auditory nerves are easy to break when subjected to loud noises. The damage is made worse if you have played in a band or worked in a noisy factory for a long time.
The inner ear and its delicate structures are also damaged by a severe blow to the head Our cilia often get bent out of shape or broken and then randomly transmit impulses directly to the brain which interprets them as a sound, although there is no sound present.
