Client Asked:
My aunt who is in her late sixties, was diagnosed with tinnitus about 6 months ago. She will be travelling next month, a long flight, about 20 hours total. She is concerned that the pressure while flying may harm her existing condition. Is there any type of medication, or anything that may help alleviate her concerns? Thank you.
Our Response:
Hello Liza,
A long flight can definitely aggravate one's tinnitus. Your Aunt should use ear plugs while she is flying, as the noise and pressure could certainly increase the volume of her tinnitus. We could be of help to her in the treatment of her tinnitus but we would need further details in order to pinpoint the root cause of her tinnitus.
Exposure to Loud noise causes damage which normally results in tinnitus, this is a very common cause of tinnitus and we have an excellent success rate in treating this particular type of tinnitus. There are millions of tiny hairs housed in the cochlea that move when you perceive an external sound.
As and when an external noise is picked up the minute hairs move and send impulses through the auditory nerve which is interpreted as a noise by your brain.
Agition then result in a stirring of all those minuscule hair nerve cell, much like a field of wheat on a farm moving in tune with the wind.
The hairs in the cochlea are easily broken from the pressures generated by sudden bursts of sounds. Obviously those that are unfortunate enough to work in a very loud environment or visit very noisy places over a period of time will experience more damage.
Any type of surgery to the head can also cause noise induced tinnitus.
Hearing loss is most certainly not reversible however the tinnitis remedies have been very successful at lowering the tinnitus levels from a damaged cohlea.
