I am a musician and was exposed to a loud feedback noise from a bass guitar amp with a 15 inch speaker for about 10 seconds or so.

I have a high-pitched ringing of about 7KhZ in mostly my left ear and somewhat less in the right ear. This incident happened about 7 months ago.

Hello Charles,

From the descripton of your exposure to a loud noise from your guitar amp it is obvious to me that you suffered from cochlear damage.

This exposure to a sudden very loud noise has almost certainly caused the cochlea damage leading to high frequency hearing loss and the high pitched ringing your are hearing in the right ear.When an external sound is heard the thousands of little hairs in the inner ear are stimulated.

Whenever an external noise is picked up the minute hairs sway and send signals through the auditory nerve which is interpreted as a noise by your brain.

The agitation of the hairs in the inner ear can be likened to a field of long grass rippling in time with the breeze.

These microscopic hair cells and those delicate auditory nerves get damaged easily when subjected to loud noises. The damage is all the more amplified if you are a habitual concert goer or have worked in a loud environment for a long time.

These delicate organs can also be damaged from a knock on the head. Our cilia often get bent out of shape or broken and then randomly transmit impulses directly to the brain which interprets them as a noise, although there is no sound present.

Tinnitus from noise (cochlea damage tinnitus) is also caused by scuba diving accidents, swimming pool incidents, ear wax removals etc.

Hearing loss is most certainly not reversible however the tinnitus remedies have been very successful at lowering the tinnitus levels from a damaged cohlea.
