Katie asked:

After a bout of several ear infections and rounds of antibiotics, I was left with the hissing static noise in my ear that has lasted for the last 10 yrs. Recently, it has changed to feeling like my ear is full and that I am echoing. No real dizziness to speak of. The noise in my ear has increased in volumn with this new development.

Our Response:

Hello Katie,

I believe that the problems you are experiencing with tinnitus and the feeling of fullness with echoing are twofold.

Firstly the tinnitus. The most probable cause of your tinnitus stems from your history of ear infections. Tinnitus and high frequency hearing loss as a result of cochlear damage that stems from the ear infections is indeed a very common cause of tinnitus.

The tinnitus noises that you have described can also indicate cochlear damage. I have provided you with cochlear damage information in a link below which will explain in detail how this condition can be treated.

Katie, your second problem is most likely to be blocked Eustachian Tubes. The symptoms you have described to me of a fullness or pressure feeling in the ear as well as the echoing, are normally associated with a condition known as Patulous Eustachian Tubes.

This might sound serious but it really isn't and we can clear it up quite easily. As with the cochlear damage tinnitus, I have provided more information regarding Patulous Eustachian Tubes below for you to read.
