I have a very slight hearing loss as the result of a military career involving the frequent use of headsets and fairly high levels of constant noise. However, my tinnitis did not show up until fairly recently. For the last year or so it was off and on but now it is fairly constant. It is not a problem right now, my hearing is not affected and I sleep well, it is just a little bothersome. I haven't been to a doctor yet but plan to get it checked out. Right now I do have fairly high levels of stress associated with my job. This could be part of the explanation as this condition has occurred within the last several months. I have not had my cholesterol checked but intend to have that done as part of my doctors check out.

Hello David,
The fact that you have been exposed to loud noise over many years almost certainly means you have suffered some cochlear damage in the inner ear. This leads to high frequency hearing loss and tinnitus in many cases.The hypothalamus and affiliated structures in the cerebellum, such as the Pons, the corpus callosum, the brain stem, the ventricular system do result in causing noises.
The hypothalamus is a primitive part of the brain located under the 3 rd ventricle. It manages lots of systems in the human body, including the pituitary gland.
Ideally the choisest way to cure stress related tinnitis is to remove the problems that are responsible for the stress.
The fact that you are exposed to high levels of stress in your job could mean that you are also suffering from stress induced tinnitus. This phenomenon is very common amongst people in the military and also stressed out musicians.
I have included two links below which will explain cochlea damage tinnitus and stress or trauma tinnitus in detail. It is likely you are suffering from one or both of these conditions.
