I received a perforated ear drum due to suction which has since healed, but could be causing tinnitus. There is no hearing loss. However, this occurred during my sinus/allergy season and my ears are "full" and there is tinnitus and eustatian clicking. Antihistimines and saline sprays don't appear to be helping much. Would this fall just into your Type 3 category. Thoughts? Thanks.

Dear Carl,

Taking antihistaminews will not help for your tinnitus. The tinnitus can indeed actually be aggravated by the taking of antihistamines. When one has been taking antibiotics and antihistamines for any length of time in order to treat or control sinus problems, a thickening of the mucous in the ear takes place and a pressure buildup occurs because the mucous can no longer drain out through the very narrow Eustachian tubes.It's very normal for people who have sinus problems to occasionally experience tintinitus symptoms. This is because the mucous builds up and ultimately blocks the inner ear canal which causes pressure and may induce the ringing in the ear symptoms. This additional build up of pressure can not only cause tinnitus but also some middle ear infections.Sufferers of sinusitis, rhinitis and allergies will sure enough at some time in their lives hear tintinitus sounds. Tinnitus from sinus may also be caused by your body reacting to drugs, antibiotics or antihistamines. After long periods of taking antibiotics or antihistamines to control the sinus problems tintinitus is often heard. It is the antibiotics and antihistamines that cause the mucous in the middle ear to become too thick and viscous to easily drain away through the very small Eustachian tubes. Due to the Eustachian tubes being very small this additional build up of mucous in the middle ear canal will start causing problems and maybe even tinnitus. Tinnitus results.
