My tinnitus all began with a cold...!

My tinnitus all began with a cold (28th March) and (according to my GP) a viral infection of the inner ear. I had a right blocked ear and everything, especially high pitch noises and voices echo in the ear. When I press against the ear, mucusy discharge ooze out from the throat and the ear was momentarily cleared. There were the slight tinges way inside the ear.The doctor said that it was a viral infection of the inner ear, a very common problem and prescribed Benecol spray and sinutab. After a week, she prescribed Octrivine, twice a day for a week, together with Nurofen.
Whenever I applied the Octrivine, it would cause the need to blow my nose, with plenty of mucusy discharge and momentary relief. The echo and blocked symptoms remain after a week so I was given a stronger spray called Rhina something but my body react badly to it and I only took Nurofen for a week. I had the first ringing in my ear (for the whole night) after spending 5 hours at a conference with lectures echoing in my right ear. The ear rang all night (5th April). After that week, I asked to be referred to an ENT consultant but was put on Octrivine and Nurofen for another week and when this did not work, I was referred to an ENT consultant. He did a hearing test. My hearing in my left hear was perfect but on the infected ear, I could hear OK except for low/long frequencies below 50DB.I was prescribed Serc 16mg 3 times aday for 2 weeks and referred to an Audiologist.
The first week, of taking Serc brought Headaches but it soon went with plenty of water intake and some Paracetemol. As I do not feel dizzy and have good balance, Meniere's disease was sort of ruled out by the Audiologist. The Audiologist believed that the lining and membrane in the inner ear/cochelea is damaged as a result of over use of seriod based drugs and prescribed further 2 weeks of SERC and Gingko Biloba. Some improvement at present as the blocked feeling is virtually gone but there is the beginning of very high pitch ringing in the ears. I took time off work and relax with plenty of sleep and the ear ringing subsided but exposure to high frequency means ringing for the whole night and a night with MTV on just to catch a few hours sleep. HELP!I teach ICT and the months from November to May were particularly stressful. I am off work now until September 2004.
I no longer get that microphone effect when I listen from my right ear but I still get the slight echoing that would lead to the blocked ear feeling if I watch TV. This would momentarily clear if I press against the ear from the outside or if I close my nostrils and blow then swallow before letting go.

The tinnitus you are experiencing is ceratinly as a result of cochlea damage.It's very ordinary for people who have sinus problems to occasionally experience tinnitus symptoms. This is because the mucous builds up and eventually blocks the internal ear canal which causes pressure and may induce the ringing in the ear symptoms. This additional build up of pressure can not only cause tinnitus but also some middle ear infections.Sufferers of sinusitis, rhinitis and allergies will sure enough at some time in their lives hear tinnitus noises. Tinnitus from sinus may also be caused by your body reacting to drugs, antibiotics or antihistamines.
After long periods of consuming antibiotics or antihistamines to restrain the sinus problems tinnitus is often heard. It is the antibiotics and antihistamines that cause the mucous in the middle ear to become too thick and viscous to easily drain away through the very small Eustachian tubes. Due to the Eustachian tubes being very small this additional build up of mucous in the middle ear canal will start causing problems and maybe even tinnitus. It is probable that the this damage to the cochlea was caused by the viral infection of the inner ear.
