Tinnitus: I believe my tinnitus is almost exclusively in the left ear. I didn't notice any noise until I had an external ear infection at the same time I developed a cold which lead to a middle ear infection. This happened about 3 years ago. At the time I was put on a 7 or 10 day course of cortisone to clear the middle ear.
It was not long after that that I noticed a very high pitched buzzing. The EENT DR. had auditory testing done which showed no loss of hearing, then said there was nothing else he could do. At times I am able to ignore it and other times, like tonight when it is very intense.

Hello Martha,
It is obvious that the external ear infection, which developed into a middle ear infection as a result of the cold that you experienced has caused damage to the inner ear structure. This is cochlea damage and results in the high pitched buzzing noise, tinnitus. Cochlea damage induced tinnitus also causes hearing loss in the higher frequencies. When an external noise is experienced the thousands of little hairs in the cochlea are stimulated.
When a sound gets discerned by the ears and these minute hairs move, impulses go streaking through the auditory nerve which your brain interprets as a noise.
The movements of the hairs in the cochlea can be likened to a field of grass rippling in time with the breeze.
The cilia in the cochlea are easily damaged from the pressures generated by sudden bursts of sounds. Obviously those that are unfortunate enough to work in a noisy place or frequent noisy pubs over a period of time will suffer further damage.
The inner ear and its delicate structures are also easily damaged by a strong blow to the head The tiny hairs often get bent out of shape or even broken and then randomly transmit impulses directly to the brain which interprets them as a noise, although there is no sound present.
Tinnitus from noise (cochlea damage tinnitus) is also often a result of scuba diving accidents, swimming pool incidents, ear wax removals etc.
