Tinnitus: My tinnitus is a hissing sound like steam coming from a radiator in both ears that comes and goes.

Hello Gerald,

Although you have not supplied a great deal of detail regarding your tinnitus and the history behind it, you do mention working in a machine shop with a moderate noise level. When an external noise is experienced the many thousands of little hairs in the cochlea are stimulated.

As and when an external sound is picked up the tiny hairs sway and send impulses through the auditory nerve which is interpreted as a sound by your brain.

The agitation of the hairs in the cochlea can be likened to a field of grass rippling in tune with the wind.

The cilia in the inner ear are easily damaged from the pressures generated by extreme blasts of sounds. The damage is made worse if you are a band member or have worked in a noisy factory for a long time.
