Cochlea damage results in hearing loss and tinnitus being experienced.

So what is cochlea damage?
 There are millions of tiny hair cells in the cochlea (discussed in detail below) that are stimulated by the pressure of sound waves.
This stimulation causes movement of the tiny hairs, which is similar to a wheat field moving in time to the wind blowing.
When sound is perceived by the ear and these auditory hairs move, electrical impulses are discharged through the auditory nerve which the brain translates as sound.
Quite simple isn't it?
These tiny hair cells and the tiny auditory nerves are very easily damaged when exposed to sudden loud noises or you have been exposed to loud noises over an extended period of time.
These sensitive organs can also be damaged as a result of a severe blow to the head.
The tiny hairs can get bent or even broken and then send electrical impulses randomly to the brain which are interpreted as sound, even though there might be a complete absence of sound.

What else can cause Cochlea Damage?
Cochlea damage leading to tinnitus can often result from procedures such as:
- ear wax removals
- ear candling
- swimming accidents
- sports injuries
- dental surgery
- head surgery
- ear or nasal passage surgery
- middle ear infections and fevers
- Inner ear infections and problems
One of the strange things about this form of tinnitus is that sometimes you don't even have to have been exposed to exceptionally loud noises.
The organs of the inner and middle ear are extremely sensitive and can easily be permanently damaged.
A severe blow to the head such as the blow one will get from the airbags in a motor vehicle collision, head and dental surgery, but the most common cause is good old noise!
Usually it is the continued exposure to loud noises in the workplace, pubs, clubs or in your car. Sudden exposure to high levels of noise like gunfire also are prime causes of tinnitus.
Other examples of dangerous noises are explosions, gunfire and mortar explosions often experienced by people in the military or police forces, people who have frequented clubs and discotheques with exceptionally loud music, and workers in noisy factories or work areas.
Type 4 tinnitus is also often caused by air bag's being triggered in auto accidents, also head, nasal and dental surgery such as root canal treatment.
Ear wax removal, ear candling, inserting sharp objects into the ear to give it a scratch. These all lead to cochlea damage which will cause Type 4 tinnitus.

How the Cochlea works

The illustration at left shows a cross section of the Organ of Corti in Cochlea, showing some of the 15,000 microscopic sensory hair cells which are very fragile and are easily damaged.
When the movement of the tiny bones in the middle ear vibrate the oval window of the cochlea, waves are created in the fluid surrounding the cochlea.
These waves bend the basilar membrane in place corresponding to specific frequencies. Hair cells in those places then brush against the overlying tectorial membrane (shown in blue) generating an electrical impulse which gets sent to the brain. The brain interprets those electrical impulses as sound.
The nerve endings are shown in yellow in the illustration. When the tiny hairs and nerve endings become damaged as a result of exposure to noise, tinnitus and high frequency hearing loss often occurs. |
