Herpes zoster oticus (HZ oticus) is a viral infection of the inner, middle, and external ear .

HZ oticus manifests as severe pain in the ear, and also associated cold sores, usually of the external canal and pinna (the largely cartilaginous projecting portion of the external ear).

Patients often recall, perhaps in childhood, a bout of chickenpox (varicella). A minority of patients also have history of previous herpes zoster viral infection

Typically, patients will experience severe ear pain , and also the following may occur:

Painful, burning blisters in and around the ear, on the face, in the mouth, and or on the tongue

Vertigo

Hearing loss

Tinnitus

Eye Pain
